MANILA, President – President Rodrigo Duterte is willing to resign as the chief executive if the government will shift to a federal form of government during his term.
“Two years, if you have the federal setup, I will resign as President. Three years, sibat ako (I will go). Four years, ay salamat (thanks),” Duterte said.
Nestor Corrales mentioned in his article for Inquirer that the Philippine president made the remarks in his speech during an event with the League of Cities and Provinces at Malacañang on Wednesday night.
Duterte mentioned that it will be best for the Philippines to copy the French government setup where there’s a president and a prime minister.
“My advice is copy, copy the French setup. We have to because ang Filipino gusto talaga niya mag-boto ng Presidente ‘yan (Filipinos want to vote for their President). Hindi mo kunin sa kanila ‘yan eh (Don’t get that from them),” he said.
The President said he is willing to offer his resignation as soon as the shift to a federal government is ready.
“If they can shorten the proceedings, you have a Constitution that’s federal in three or two years, then you have to elect a president. Of course that would automatically, legally mean hindi na ako pwede (I’m not allowed), so I will offer to resign,” he said.
During the campaign period, Duterte has been very vocal on supporting federalism over the present form of government; saying the system would empower local governments and pave the way for prosperity in the regions.
In a Rappler story by Pia Ranada, it was mentioned that Duterte once again noted during his first State of the Nation Address on July 25 that he is willing to resign if a federal form of government would be adapted.
Duterte also reiterated the same statement that he would no longer run for President if the system would push through.
“Ako, nagtratrabaho ako (Me, I’m working). Do not feel short-changed. My will to work is there, but if you’ll ask me if I am happy, I am not,” he said.
“What’s really pushing me to move is my love for my country,” he added.
