There’s no sadder news than to hear about the “world’s saddest polar bear” die. Argentina’s last polar bear named Arturo died after having to live for 31 years.
Arturo was coined as the the “world’s saddest polar bear” after her female partner died years ago. Arturo died last Sunday and the veterinary doctors claimed it was because of blood circulation imbalance, which caused him to deteriorate fast. He was already weak because of old age as well.
The polar bear, who was transferred from the United States 23 years ago, was the latestv death recorded from the controversial Mendoza Zoo. Over 60 animals have died in a span of December to May. Officials confirmed that bacteria outbreak and overcrowding are the culprit for these deaths making the zoo accountable.
Meanwhile, environmentalist have been campaigning for Arturo’s transfer to a zoo in Canada since. But now, it was too late. Soledad Sede released a statement saying “We hope that he will be the last polar bear to be held in a zoo in our country and that his case will oblige the authorities to review the state of other exotic species still living in the same situation,”
On the other hand, the city hall has plans of just converting the said zoo to a nature reserve and create better site for conserving animals especially those who are endangered.
