MANILA, Philippines – Doubling the salary of cops and other law enforcers will take more than five years.
Department of Budget and Management (DBM) Secretary Ben Diokno made this disclosure even as he said policemen and soldiers may have their hazard pay and allowances increased in the meantime.
“Most likely, we would first adjust the hazard pay because their lives are really on the line, as well as the allowances, so that there would be no distortion. We would study that,” he told the Philippine Daily Inquirer.
According to Diokno, doubling the salary of policemen is not that easy since they would also have to adjust the salaries of other similar personnel to avoid distorting wages. He said the increase in allowances would have to do for now as they search for ways to make the pay hike feasible.
Proposed Budget: P3.35T
Diokno also presented his proposed budget for 2017 which is P3.35 trillion—11 percent higher than this year’s budget of P3 trillion.
Three-fourths of the budget will be allotted for the government’s various operations, with the rest allotted for the country’s debts or special projects.
Out of the budget, P118 billion will go to the construction of more school buildings, P54.9 billion will go to the conditional cash transfer program, and P50 billion will be allotted for the health insurance of poor families.
Diokno added the budget for the Department of National Defense (DND) will be re-aligned more towards the salaries and pensions of soldiers.
