A former construction worker saved more than 100 children in the last 15 years.
In 2001, Tong Phouc Phuc discovered that a hospital in Vietnam was carrying out abortion. He saw women going in pregnant and going out without a baby. The revelation broke his heart.
He asked the hospital if he could give the aborted fetuses a decent burial. With his life savings, he brought a plot of land in Hon Thom Mountain in Nha Trang in 2004 and turned it into a graveyard. His wife thought he was going crazy.
“I believe these fetuses have souls. And I don’t want them to be wandering souls,” Tong told India Times.
Tong said he must’ve buried more than 10,000 fetuses. He would always place a small plaque and flowers on each grave.
News of his work spread and mothers, who wanted to abort their children at first, asked him for help. This gave him an idea; he created an orphanage so women don’t have to abort their unborn child. Now, his land Hon Thom also became a home to more than 100 children.
Tong didn’t consider the orphans as outsiders though. He treated them like his own child. According to Life News, he made the names of the children “easy-to remember.” The boys are named “Vinh“ (honor), while the girls are called “Tam” (heart). They also carry his family name ‘Phuc.’
“I will continue this work till my last breath,” Tong said. “I hope my own kids will continue helping people when I’m gone.”
