- Leni Robredo thanked Senator Alan Peter Cayetano for conceding to her
- Cayetano said Robredo is not only leading the VP race, but has clearly won it
- Senator Bongbong Marcos accused the Aquino administration of rigging the election to make Robredo win
Camarines Sur Representative Leni Robredo thanked rival Senator Alan Peter Cayetano for conceding to her and calling her the clear winner in the vice presidential race.
“We are thankful for the statement of Senator Alan Peter Cayetano on the result of the election,” Robredo said in a statement issued right after Cayetano conceded.
In his statement, Senator Cayetano, Duterte’s running mate, said: “I humbly concede my vice presidential bid to Representative Leni Robredo, who, by all accounts and with 96% of the votes already tallied, is our country’s presumptive Vice President-elect. Rep. Leni is not only leading the race, she has clearly won it.”
Robredo expressed her readiness to work with the senator to promote the welfare of the people.
“Nananatili tayong bukas sa pakikipagtulungan sa kanya para sa patuloy na pag-unlad ng buhay ng ating kababayan,” she said.
[I remain open to cooperate with him for the continuous improvement of our countrymen’s lives]
Though Cayetano conceded to Robredo, the battle for the second highest post in the country still rages on.
In Marc Jayson Cayabyab’s article published by Inquirer on May 12, 2016, Cayabcayb wrote that as of 12:45 p.m. on Thursday, May 12, Robredo maintained her 200,000 vote lead over closest rival, Senator Bongbong Marcos.
Marcos, the perennial front runner in pre-election surveys, posted at least one million votes over Robredo on the first days of the counting of votes, but later on, the Camarines Sur representative had overtaken him.
The camp of Marcos accused Robredo’s camp, which is the Aquino administration’s Liberal Party, of rigging the elections to make Robredo win.
Robredo called Marcos’ cheating allegations unfair. She called on the senator to wait for the final result of the canvassing.
