DAVAO CITY, Philippines – With the 2016 National Elections finally concluded and the elected politicians just waiting for the official poll results, supporters, or for most of them at least, can finally ease themselves a bit.
Especially presumptive president-elect Rodrigo Duterte’s staunch adherents.
Of course, the candidates all went into battle: the allegations, the propaganda, the mudslinging and all the struggles, these were consequences they had to face for running. But it is not just the candidates who’s gone through tough times. Apparently, so did many of their supporters who did whatever they could to show their support.
One online user shared his experience and the ‘risks’ he took to attend the mayor’s final rally at the Crocodile Park just to show his support to Duterte. Peter Cris Laturgo detailed how they had to walk for some hours and cross a river just to get to the rally location. He said in a lengthy Facebook post:
“[Then] I asked myself, “Do I need to cross the river just to get there?!?”
“Indeed, it was very risky! The condition of the boat being pushed by a bamboo stick, made it even riskier.
“But after seeing many people jumping off the dam, helping one another, falling in line and waiting for the boat to transport them to the other side of the river, I made a decision, I took the risk.”
He realized a lot of things while he was there; how disciplined the ‘Dutertards’ were; falling in line and helping people load and offload the boat, and the boatmen did not ask much for the fare. Everyone was helping one other.
Laturgo said being at the rally, with hundreds of thousands of Duterte supporters singing the Philippine National anthem all together gave him goosebumps. He even cried singing it.
The rally was indeed a challenge. Not just to him and the thousands who walked just to be there, but even to the senior citizens and physically disabled who braved the trek – determined to be there no matter what. It had been a very trying and tiring day, but everyone was in high spirits for Mayor Duterte.
And now that the vote counting is almost over and Digong has unofficially secured the presidential seat, the risks and sacrifices all become worth it. The ‘Dutertards’ finally got their sweetest victory.
