- Journalists have often compared Donald Trump and Rodrigo Duterte
- Charlie Campbell of Time cited their similarities and differences
- He enumerated the mayor’s brilliant accomplishments as public servant
- He said Davao City Mayor and presumptive president-elect of the Philippines is far different from Trump
DAVAO CITY, Philippines – Time‘s Charlie Campbell, in an article published on May 10, compared United States’ presidential bet Donald Trump and Philippines’ presumptive president-elect Rodrigo Duterte.
As many journalists, foreign or local, have compared Mayor Duterte to America’s Donald Trump, Campbell gave comprehensive comparisons that actually differentiated the two assumptive presidents. He began with this statement:
“One calls Mexicans rapists; the other jokes about gang rape. One vows to build a wall at the Mexican border; the other threatens to “butcher” criminals. Both have used stump speeches to brag about the size of their manhoods. And both have had rows with the Pope.”
Adding up to the list are the awful remarks Trump made against Muslim immigration to the U.S. and the tasteless rape joke of Duterte. They really have a lot of atrocious similarities.
However, Campbell quoted major disparities between the two; saying that while ‘America is looking at the unknown’ with Trump, the Filipinos, on the other hand, are aware of what they are getting.
Citing some of the brilliant achievements of Rodrigo Duterte as a public servant — like the 10PM curfew, liquor ban after 1AM, a complete ban on public smoking, 9PM curfew on ‘boisterous karaoke’, and his support to minorities, Moro Muslims, and gay marriages — he said:
“The main difference between Trump and Duterte is that we have a rough idea what a society governed by Duterte looks like — moreover, those who live in it are overwhelmingly supportive. Monday’s presidential vote was the 11th election that Duterte has fought, and the 11th that he has won. The adoration that greets him in Davao is palpable.
“The Philippines knows what it is getting. With Trump, America is looking at the unknown.”
And many are most likely going to agree that Campbell is right; Duterte is definitely NOT like Trump.
