- Supporters cry foul over Duterte camp’s depiction of Roxas’ visit in HK
- Roxas’ spokesperson said ‘dejected’ Roxas was actually waiting for Robredo to finish her interviews
- LP standard bearer’s official FB page also shared pictures of Roxas and Robredo meeting a big crowd
MANILA, Philippines – Supporters of Liberal Party (LP) standard bearer Mar Roxas are crying foul over Davao City Mayor Rodrigo Duterte’s camp’s captioning of a picture depicting him as sad over the low turnout of voters who met up with him during his sortie in Hong Kong.
The picture— reminiscent of the famous ‘sad Keanu Reeves’ meme— shows Roxas sitting in a park while seemingly being depressed due to the few number of supporters in Hong Kong.
“Most people go to Hong Kong to enjoy and be happy. Mar was in for a real shock after finding out for himself that indeed Duterte has captured almost all OFWs,” Duterte spokesman Peter Laviña wrote in the caption. “Nilangaw ang rally doon ng tuwad na daan. The visibly disoriented, demoralized Mar was a picture of defeat. The lady on his left seems to sum it up all!”
However, Roxas’ media relations officer Mina Akram shared on her Facebook another angle of the picture which shows Roxas casually chatting with some OFWs and said he was actually waiting for his running mate Camarines Sur Rep. Leni Robredo to finish her interviews nearby.
“He sat there because he was waiting for Cong Leni to finish her media interviews. It took about 10-15 minutes so while waiting, he sat in one corner and had random chats with some of our kababayans. I guess he also took the opportunity to rest after a 3-hour forum attended by representatives of different OFW communities in HK,” she said.
Conceding that the sortie conducted on Duterte’s behalf which included the Mocha Girls and actor Aljur Abrenica was bigger, Mina said it was unfair to call their visit pitiful since they opted to go with a forum rather than with a big show.
“We opted to do an OFW forum rather than an entertainment show because we believe that it is the right way to listen and address the OFW concerns. Quality over quantity of activities has always been our rule,” she said, adding that they continued to remain civil during their forum despite being heckled by Duterte’s supporters nearby.
To back up their claims, Roxas’ official Facebook page also released several pictures of him and Robredo being warmly greeted by a large crowd of OFWs.
