A Filipino with mixed ethnicity is suffering from leukemia and is badly in need of a bone marrow transplant.
Joshua Weekes, son of a Filipino-British mother and a Carribbean-Icelandic father, is having a hard time finding the correct match for the transplant because of his varied ethnicity.
The family, ABS-CBN said in a story, is seeking the help of the Filipino community to help their poor six-year-old boy.
As early as March this year, the boy had been featured in several foreign news sites because of his struggle.
According to the ABS-CBN story, the Weekes family has set up a drive to search for their son’s right match. It is open for kind individuals aged 17 to 35. Each volunteer would be asked to donate a cheek swab sample for the doctors to check.
“We need lots of people to register. We need lots of ethnic, varied ethnic backgrounds to help him and other patients as well,” said a friend of Joshua’s mother, Kathryn Barczi.
Other than the family’s drive, interested donors may also contact and register with the Canadian Blood Services.
