- Escudero asks PNP chief to relieve four ‘LP generals’
- The police generals allegedly joined a political meeting of supporters of Liberal Party (LP) standard-bearer Mar Roxas.
- The PNP officials include PNP director for Intelligence Generoso Cerbo Jr., Chief Superintendent Renier Idio, Chief Superintendent Bernardo Diaz, and Ronald Santos.
Vice Presidential aspirant Francis “Chiz” Escudero has lambasted Philippine National Police Chief Director General Ricardo Marquez for not taking action on the relief of four police generals who allegedly joined supporters of Liberal Party (LP) standard-bearer Mar Roxas in a political meeting.
Speaking during a press conference, Escudero said Marquez could be held liable for having a “double-standard,” as he mentioned that his immediate act to relieve a police chief in a municipality in Abra for a similar violation interpreted political partisanship which is prohibited among government officials, including the police.
In an article published by the Inquirer on April 14, Escudero said Marquez has explained that the Abra police chief was relieved due to a complaint filed against him. Escudero said he is waiting for the same action for the complaint he has filed against the generals.
The four generals in Escudero’s letter of complaint sent to Marquez include PNP director for Intelligence Generoso Cerbo Jr., Chief Superintendent Renier Idio from Cagayan Valley, Chief Superintendent Bernardo Diaz from Western Visayas, and Ronald Santos from Southern Tagalog.
The PNP officials were reportedly seen in a meeting with LP supporters at a hotel in Quezon City.
The officials, however, denied the accusation. They said the event was not a political gathering but a personal get-together with a retired military officer who happened to be in the Roxas camp.
Showing high respect for General Marquez, Escudero expressed confidence that Marquez won’t fail him even as he stressed the importance of maintaining a fair and credible election.
Escudero, in his letter, said: “Unscrupulous police officers bent on exercising partisan political activity for personal gain and self-aggrandizement have no place in the [PNP]. Their actions undermine the series of internal reforms you have done.”
