- Mayor Rodrigo Duterte accepted Senator Grace Poe’s offer to appoint him as crime czar should she be elected
- Poe says her earlier choice, former military official Ariel Querubin is willing to give way to Duterte
- Poe adds that this will be a challenge to Duterte since he promises to curb crime in three to six months
It seems Davao Mayor Rodrigo Duterte aims to prove that he can eliminate crime even if he does not win in the elections.
Duterte said on Friday that he is willing to accept the opportunity to be anti-crime czar under his opponent Grace Poe’s administration should she win as president.
“I would be glad to serve under Grace Poe,” the Davao City Mayor was quoted in a GMA News Online story.
Poe earlier said that she is appointing former military official Colonel Ariel Querubin as president. But she is also open to choosing Duterte since Querubin is willing to give way to him.
This statement comes after Duterte’s pronouncement that he will appoint Poe as tourism secretary if he becomes president.
“In exchange, I want to offer to him the position as crime czar because of what he said that he will finish the problems of criminality in six months,” Poe was quoted in a PhilStar story.
Poe added that being a crime czar would be a challenge to the mayor who has employed a brazen leadership in his own kingdom in Davao City. Duterte has been keen on his promise to curb crime in three to six months.
“Ang maganda ‘non dahil sinabi niya three to six months matatapos ‘yung problema,” Poe said. [What’s good about it is he said that he will solve the problem in three to six months.]
In recent pre-election surveys, Duterte is the top candidate followed by Poe at second place. Vice President Jejomar Binay and ruling party bet Manuel Roxas III are tied at number three. Senator Miriam Defensor Santiago is still at the bottom of the five-way race.
