- Analyst says feisty senator’s poor result in latest Pulse Asia survey an ominous sign
- He thinks voters believe Santiago’s health is a risk, is not serious about her presidential bid
- He says the senator can only hope for an incredible turn of events in her favor before the elections
MANILA, Philippines – Even as presidential candidate Sen. Miriam Defensor Santiago vowed to fight on despite her poor showing in the latest Pulse Asia survey, one analyst thinks the poll result is an ominous sign of her looming defeat in the May elections.
According to Political and Electoral Reform executive director Ramon Casiple, the senator’s increasing downward slide in the surveys means she would most likely lose in the elections.
“I would count her out na. Kasi ilang surveys na iyan, pababa siya nang pababa. Maliit na nga siya, pababa pa,” he told DZMM. [Her rankings have gone down in several surveys, and she’s already ranked low.]
“Basta nag-single digit ka by this time, one month after ng start ng official campaign, hindi ka tumitinag sa single digit, may problema kang malaki,” he added.
[If your survey score is still single digit by this time, if the official campaign period has started for one month and you’re still there, then you have a big problem.]
When asked for the reason of her decline, Casiple surmised it must because voters are thinking about Santiago’s health or are questioning the seriousness of her run.
“Sa tingin ko, may perception ang botante na either hindi siya seryoso o kaya talagang wala nang chances o tingin nila na iyung kanyang health problem ay insurmountable,” he said.
[I think it’s because the voters have a perception that she’s either not serious, or that she really has no chance or because her health problem is insurmountable.]
Casiple added Santiago can only hope that a significant event in her favor would happen at this point so as to still give her a fighting chance.
