Over 20,000 residents have fled from their homes in Lanao del Sur in the past week after the Armed Forces of the Philippines (AFP) intensified its stance against the Maute rebel group who is believed to have formed an alliance with international terrorist organizations.
In an article published by GMA News Online on February 27, it was disclosed that members of the Philippine Army’s 51st Infantry Battalion (51st IB) were able to overrun the rebels’ stronghold in the town of Butig; killing two local terrorists who were protecting the group’s camp.
“Nakuha na ang first line of defense. Dalawang terorista ang napatay ng mga sundalo [We already got the first line of defense. Two terrorists were killed by the soldiers],” said Col. Billy dela Rosa, commander of the 51st IB.
The military official also noted that government elements were able to seize at least two Armalite rifles, one sniper barret, a rocket-propelled grenade (RPG), a radio equipment and a binocular set during one of the raids.
Meanwhile, the AFP said that since the clash erupted on Saturday last week, a total of 55 rebels have been neutralized by military and police operatives.
Dela Rosa has also confirmed that according to intelligence information, Maute’s group has recruited male and female minors aged 14 years old and above to join its terror operations.
“May mga edad 14 anyos pataas ang nahikayat ng Maute terror group na sumali sa kanilang pangkat [There are 14-year-olds and above who were recruited to join the Maute terror group],” Dela Rosa said; adding that photographs of several minors carrying firearms were recovered from the raided camp.
