Viral on social media right now is Victoria Miranda‘s feature on Humans of Amsterdam. The 32-year-old Filipina inspired many others by sharing the story of how she got to where she is in life now. As per Victoria, the road wasn’t exactly smooth from the get-go.
See, Victoria does not come from an affluent family back in the Philippines, which meant she had to work night shifts at a call center so that she and her two younger brothers could all afford school. She has gotten used to getting only “a few” hours of sleep at night after years of being a working student.
On top of this, she had to struggle with the constant societal and cultural pressure of getting married and “settling down.” When she got the opportunity to work in Amsterdam, though, she did not only get the chance to earn more than enough, her horizons also widened when it comes to the notion that a woman should start worrying about settling down as the clock ticks her life away. This is her story, as she told Humans of Amsterdam:
“In the Philippines when you are 27 and single people start to ask about when you are getting married. I come from a middle-class family. In the Philippines middle-class means you eat 3 times a day. I have two younger brothers and in order for them to go to university I worked night shifts in a call centre to help pay for their tuition. During the day I would study and at night I would be working.
“For six years I would only sleep a few hours a night. After my graduation I got the opportunity to work abroad. I do miss home but for the first time in my life I work normal hours and I get to sleep at night and I even have time for hobbies. I’m starting to get into knitting and I love traveling and photography. I’m 32 and It took me a long time to get where I am in life and I’m not even a little bit worried about getting married.”
Now, she is inspiring many other Filipinas to start pursuing what their heart truly desires, instead of remaining in the shackles society put them in. After all, it is true that some people are perfectly happy never getting married, and it doesn’t make a woman less of a woman if she hasn’t found a rightful man to marry yet — at any point in her life.
