It’s always ridiculous hearing stories about salespeople not recognizing celebrities, royalty, and other affluent personalities walking in their stores wearing inconspicuous clothing. As a result, they are treated like normal people. In 1920, this situation happened to no less than an Indian King.
Jai Singh, Maharaja of Alwar in Rajasthan, was strolling along the streets of London when a Rolls Royce showroom caught his eye. Singh decided to go in the store to inquire, and was surprised by the cold treatment he got. See, the Indian King wasn’t wearing his King’s clothes, and the salesman didn’t think he was someone capable of purchasing anything from the luxury car brand.
The British salesman even showed Singh out of the showroom.
If the salesman had any idea who his potential customer was, he surely would have treated him better since Rolls Royce was highly favored by Indian royalty at the time.
Unfortunately, he did not.
Upon leaving the showroom, Singh went back to his hotel room and instructed his servants to give Rolls Royce a call. The Indian King led them to tell Rolls Royce that the Maharaja of Alwar City was interested in buying 6 of the luxury cars.
Shortly, he showed up again at the showroom, this time in his royal attire. He was greeted with a red carpet and all the salesmen were in line to greet him.
Right then and there, he paid for 6 luxury cars and paid it all in cash, including the delivery fees needed to transport the cars all the way from London to India.
Upon return to his city, Jai Singh instructed the municipality to use his 6 luxury Rolls Royce cars to collect garbage around the city. This highly affected the brand’s reputation both in India and the world. People were embarrassed to drive a garbage car, no matter how expensive.
The insult to Rolls Royce was met, finally, with recognition of what they had done. Representatives from the London showroom sent Jai Singh a telegram apologizing for the way he got treated. He also received 6 more luxury Rolls Royce cars for free as a sign of good will.
Jai Singh then stopped using the luxury cars for sweeping the streets of India.
