DOHA, Qatar – The Philippines’ Carlo Biado became the 2017 WPA World 9-ball Champion on Thursday after a convincing 13-5 win over his fellow Filipino Roland Garcia in Doha, Qatar.
Biado bags $ 30,000 (P1.5 million) for his victory, while Garcia takes home $ 15,000.
Biado became the first Filipino to win the 9-ball title since Francisco “Django” Bustamante in 2010.
“I’m very, very happy now because it’s been a long time,” Biado said in an interview posted on World Pool-Billiard Association’s Facebook page.
Biado defeated Taiwan’s Wu Kun Lin in the semifinals, while Garcia won over Albania’s Klenti Kaci for a Filipino-versus-Filipino finals.
Other Filipinos who won the title after Efren “Bata” Reyes (1999) were Alex Pagulayan (2004), Ronato “Volcano” Alcano (2006), and Django Bustamante.
