Senator Kiko Pangilinan took to Twitter to defend Cherish Sharmaine Interior from online bashing. On December 16, a video showing Interior slapping an elderly taxi driver went viral on Facebook.
In the video, Interior can be seen trying to forcefully open the car door on the driver’s side while yelling at the taxi driver, Virgilio Doctor. Doctor initially refused to open his door as he had a passenger with him. However, when he pulled his window down, Interior hit him in the face and cursed at him. Doctor also claimed that Interior hit his taxi with a pipe or golf club before punching him. This enraged netizens who watched the video, causing them to curse, insult, and even threaten Interior online.
In Sen. Kiko Pangilinan’s tweets posted on December 18, he reminded the public that the wicked cannot be defeated with wickedness. He asked them to reflect on their words and actions as these do not set them apart from Interior. The senator added that although what Interior did was not right, it is also not right to curse, threaten, insult, and hurt her.
His tweets read:
“Hindi tama ang ginawa ni Cherish Sharmaine na dala ng galit sa aksidente sa kalye ay sinaktan niya ang isang matandang taxi driver ngunit hindi rin tama na sa galit ng mga nakapanood nung video sa social media ay minumura, iniinsulto, binabantaan na saktan si Cherish”
“… at nilalait ang pagkatao niya ng mga tao sa Internet.”
“We cannot defeat the wicked with wickedness nor the cruel with greater cruelty because in the end only wickedness and cruelty triumph.”
“Mali ang ginawa ni Cherish at dapat siyang humingi ng kapatawaran at managot. Subalit sa tindi ng galit natin sa ginawa ni Cherish nagawa ng ilan sa atin na manakot, manlait, magbanta, mang-insulto at manakit ng kapwa. Ano ang pinagkaiba natin kay Cherish?”
