In 2011, Vogue Paris featured the 10-year old daughter of French actress Véronika Loubry and French soccer player Patrick Blondeau. The child, Thylane Blondeau, was the subject of a huge controversy about child modeling when she appeared in the magazine. She has already been modeling since she was four when she appeared on the runway for Jean Paul Gaultier.
The controversy raised by the editorial feature of Vogue Paris focused on the issue of sexualizing the child, implying that putting the girl in the spotlight at a young age can cause a negative impact in the child’s life in the future.
"The picture was the antithesis of what childhood in our society should be; a child being exposed to a world she was not yet equipped to deal with solely to serve the needs of the adults around her." –Emma Grey, Psychologist
Véronika Loubry was shocked too, but not for the same reasons.
"The only thing that shocked me was that the necklace she wore was worth €3 million!" Loubry said.
She also mentioned that she refused some projects offered to Thylane as she wanted the child to live a normal life.
Years after the controversial Vogue appearance, Thylane still continued modeling despite of the issue it created for her in 2011. She is even popular in Instagram nowadays having 874,000 followers and has also appeared on film. She said that like her mother, she also aspires of becoming an actress.
When asked about modeling, Blondeau said, "If you have a good agency and people who take care of you...it's perfect."
