December 22, 2016 will mark another complete annual circuit of the Earth around the sun and the Philippine Atmospheric, Geophysical and Astronomical Services Administration (PAGASA) announced that the Philippines will be experiencing the longest night on this date. Furthermore, the sun will be at the farthest point south of the equator at exactly 6:44am.
This phenomenon is called the Winter’s Solstice where nights are longer especially in areas that are far from the equator.
“In the Philippines’ case, that means the duration of the longest night will be most lengthy in extreme northern Luzon and shortest in Mindanao,”said Dario Dela Cruz, astronomy chief of PAGASA.
PAGASA specified that Basco, Batanes will have 13 hours and five minutes while Manila will have 12 hours and 46 minutes of night time. Cebu City will have a night which will last for 12 hours and 28 minutes and General Santos City night will last 12 hours and 14 minutes.
