117-year-old Emma Morano from Verbania, Italy is the oldest woman living in the world today. Everyone wanted to know the secret behind her longevity.
Her secret? Diet and independence, she claims.
Morano shared with Agence France-Presse that her usual meals only consist of eggs and cookies occasionally.
“I eat two eggs a day and that’s it,” she shared. “But I do not eat much because I have no teeth.”
Dr. Carlo Bava, Morano’s physician for the past 27 years, attested to it and revealed that even during Morano’s youth, her cravings for food were very minimal.
“Emma has always eaten very few vegetables, very little fruit. When I met her, she ate three eggs per day, two raw in the morning and then an omelette at noon, and chicken at dinner,” Dr. Bava said.
Aside from her diet, she also shared another factor she believes to have greatly contributed to her long life – independence.
When asked by the New York Times in 2015, Morano shared that her independence was a significant factor. Morano shared that she was once bound in an unhappy marriage that led to a divorce in 1938, although it wasn’t until 1970 that divorce was legalized in Italy.
“I didn’t want to be dominated by anyone,” she said.
Coming from the oldest woman alive, her words are gold to many. However, it is important to note that physicians advise eating eggs in moderation.
