An online petition was made to suspend Mocha Uson’s Blog Facebook page. The petition sparked online debates about freedom of expression.
By October 24, Monday evening, 27,000 signatures had been tallied for the petition made by Paul Quilét at change.org.
Why do people want Mocha Uson’s facebook page to be banned?
According to the petition’s description, Uson “uses her Facebook page to spread fictitious and false information about pressing issues in the Philippines” and “widens the rift between those who support the current administration and those who are critical of it.”
On the other side, some people think that the petition was violating Uson’s freedom of speech. They proposed that, instead of banning her page, they should just correct any misleading or wrong information in her posts.
“This petition aims not to curtail anyone’s right to free speech. Bear in mind that the liberties listed in the Bill of Rights are not absolute,” Quilét said.
He made this update Monday night, saying that his petition is not violating Uson’s freedom of speech.
Mocha’s supporters countered with their own petition, made by Cheryl Anne, which has 8,000 signatures so far. This petition’s description says that Mocha Uson’s blog “earned a lot of followers due to its ability to reach out to the common Filipino people giving honest and true information to the public.”
Uson has more than 4.3 million followers on her Facebook page.
