MANILA, Philipines – The Supreme Court, acting as Presidential Electoral Tribunal (PET), ordered Vice President Leni Robredo to reply to the electoral protest filed by former Sen. Ferdinand “Bongbong” Marcos Jr. within ten days of receipt of summons.
Marcos, who was defeated by Robredo in the presidential race by only 263,473 votes, filed his electoral protest on June 29, a day before Robredo took her oath as the second highest ranking official in the Philippines.
On Tuesday, August 2, the former senator also filed a manifestation and omnibus motion, invoking Rule 36 of the PET Rules which provides for steps to be undertaken “to safeguard the integrity” of the ballots and other poll paraphernalia, data storage devices, and equipment used in the elections.
According to an article published by Philippine Daily Inquirer, SC’s resolution which was also released on Tuesday, August 2, said: “The Tribunal resolved to issue summons and grant the prayer of the protestant for a Precautionary Protection Order pursuant to Rules 36 of the 2010 Rules of the Presidential Electoral Tribunal.”
The SC also ordered the Commission on Elections (Comelec) to preserve and retrieve election returns pertaining to the May 2016 vice presidential race for a manual recount, judicial revision, and technical examination.
Last June, Marcos confirmed that he met then incoming Pres. Rodrigo Duterte in Davao and they talked about his plan to file an electoral protest against Robredo. He assured Duterte that he would not be affected in any way with what he plans to do.
