- PNP chief reaffirmed his support for president
- He said he will back Duterte all the way even if he declares Martial Law
- Dela Rosa also said Duterte’s declaration anchored for everyone’s benefit
MANILA, Philippines – He’ll serve as Digong’s Rock come hell or high water.
Reaffirming his support for President Rodrigo Duterte, PNP chief Ronald “Bato” Dela Rosa said he was backing his commander-in-chief all the way even if he declares Martial Law.
“As I have said, I may sink or swim with the President. I’ll go with him all the way. Whether we reach heaven or hell, I won’t leave him,” ABS-CBN quoted him as saying. “If he decides to declare Martial Law for whatever, I’ll support him.”
Dela Rosa also said he believes Duterte’s decision to declare Martial Law would be anchored on his concern for the welfare of the Filipino people and on self-gain.
“His decisions are not influenced by politics. His decisions are for everyone’s benefit,” he said. “It’s not for personal gain. What else would he want, he’s already old. He’s not after fame, either; he’s already the President. To gain wealth? No, he’s not used to money… He just gives away whatever money he has.”
The two have had a close bond since the 1980s. Dela Rosa served as Davao City’s police chief when Duterte was still mayor.
Duterte earlier threatened to declare Martial Law after Supreme Court Chief Justice Ma. Lourdes Sereno responded to his narco-list which contained the names of seven judges.
In the aftermath, Duterte apologized but maintained he was only doing his job as president. His spokespersons on the other hand said the president’s remark should not be taken literally as he was only highlighting the magnitude of the illegal drug trade in the country.
