- Tilapia Ice Cream developed by CLSU wins an international award
- It has no fishy smell and aftertaste
- Tilapia Ice Cream to be showcased in other countries
Tilapia ice cream, anyone?
Tilapia Ice Cream — something we would perhaps never imagine could be possible has surfaced; thanks to the innovative minds of the Central Luzon State University (CLSU) as they were able to come up with the award-winning Daerry’s Tilapia Ice Cream.
The name of the creamy goodness, basically, came from the nicknames of the proponents: Assistant Professor Dona “DonA” D. Vera Cruz and Dr. Tereo “tERRY” A. Abella.
In addition, the flavor was created by CLSU Freshwater Agriculture’s Rowena Velasco.
Contrary to expectations, the end product has no fishy smell or aftertaste.
“This ice cream will make you think it’s just a really good vanilla ice cream,” posted Asian Dragon Magazine on their website.
“The novelty is in the fact that it is made out of tilapia and that the texture of the ice cream, when eaten in heaping teaspoons, feels like the flaky texture of cooked tilapia meat.” it added.
The ingredients — cultured tilapia fillet, fresh cow’s milk, nuts, and cheese.
How much?
At the Chives Cafe in CLSU where it is currently being sold, the frozen delight cost Php700 for a gallon and Php30 for a smaller sandwich.
Aside from the original flavor, they also have tilapia ice cream sansrival, tilapia ice cream praline crunch (with caramelized tuna flakes) and tilapia ice cream sandwich.
Tilapia ice cream recently bested all other 350 food exhibitors from 250 countries at the recently concluded Salon International d L’Agroalimentaire (SIAL) Innovation Gold’s award during the SIAL ASEAN Manila 2016 at the World Trade Center in Pasay City.
SIAL is the world’s largest food innovation exhibition which aims to inspire people participating in the food sector to come out with ingenious products.
Daerry’s Tilapia Ice Cream will soon be showcased in SIAL networks in Paris, Canada, China, Middle East and Indonesia.
Interestingly, the product has a funny story of how it came about.
