MANILA, Philippines – One of the drug lords named by President Rodrigo Duterte on Sunday has turned himself in to Philippine National Police (PNP) Chief Ronald ‘Bato’ Dela Rosa on the night of the same day.
Franz Sabalones surrendered to Dela Rosa after his younger brother, Vice Mayor Fralz Sabalones of San Fernando, Cebu, was mistakenly named by the President in the list of suspected drug lords.
Sabalones is reportedly the second most wanted drug lord in Central Visayas who has taken over the illegal operation after Cebu’s erstwhile drug kingpin Jeffrey “Jaguar” Diaz was killed in a police operation in June.
During the press conference on Monday, Dela Rosa presented Sabalones to the media and said the man admitted to him that he is a drug lord in Visayas.
“Siya yung umamin, umamin siya drug lord siya. Drug lord ka ‘di ba?” Dela Rosa said. “Siya iyung ka-level ni Jaguar, iyung napatay… Mataas nang kaunti si Jaguar sa kanya, siya ang number 2 sa Region 7, Central Visayas.”
[He confessed to me that he’s a drug lord. You’re a drug lord, right? He is at the same level with Jaguar, the one who was killed…Jaguar was a bit higher, he’s the number 2 in region 7, Central Visayas.]
When asked why he decided to submit himself to the authorities following Duterte’s announcement, Sabalones said he wants to reform his life.
Dela Rosa also told Sabalones that he might get killed if he continue with his illegal drug operations.
“Sa dami ng naaksayang buhay sa Central Visayas ngayong nag-surrender ka magbago ka ha.’ Pag hindi siya nagbago alam na niya. Basta magbago ka,” Dela Rosa told Sabalones
[Many lives have been wasted in Central Visayas, but now that you’ve surrendered, you should change. If you don’t, you know (what’s going to happen). Just change.]
According to Dela Rosa, Sabalones will be turned over to the Criminal Investigation and Detection Group (CIDG).
Sabalones’ brother, Fralz, was wrongly tagged by Duterte in the ‘drug list’ as the one who run for mayor but lost.
