MANILA, Philippines – Netting what could be another big fish in the war against drugs, police announced the surrender of two of Quezon province’s purported biggest drug lords who also happen to be former agriculture secretary Proceso Alcala’s brother and nephew respectively.
Turning themselves to Lucena police voluntarily on Sunday were Cerilo Alcala and his son Sajid. They were accompanied by Cerilo’s younger brother Quezon Rep. Vicente Alcala and nephew Lucena City Mayor Roderick Alcala during their surrender.
According to provincial police director Sr. Supt. Antonio Yarra, the Alcala’s surrender marked a breakthrough in their anti-drug campaign in the province. According to local authorities, Sajid and Cerilo occupy Nos. 1 and 2 in their watchlist of drug pushers.
Both were previously charged with drug-related offenses three times but had their cases dismissed.
Cerilo will remain under police custody as he has two bench warrants while Sajid will be released as there is no outstanding warrant for his arrest.
Rep. Alcala denied that father and son were into drugs. He said he convinced them to surrender so they can clear their names and prevent further scandal from ruining their family’s reputation.
“They are not doing it,” he told the Philippine Daily Inquirer.
For his part, Cerilo admitted that he was indeed involved in the illegal drug trade but had long stopped.
“Matagal na akong tumigil [I have long stopped],” he said.
Yarra said Cerilo and Sajid will be strictly monitored to ensure that they will not go back to their old ways.
