MANILA, Philippines – In its latest bid to downplay the unfavorable Permanent Court of Arbitration (PCA) ruling invaliding its 9-Dash Line claim in the West Philippine Sea, China has released a propaganda video containing clips of its citizens saying they don’t care about the ruling.
The minute-and-a-half long video, which can be seen on Hong Kong Free Press’s YouTube channel, shows several Chinese repeating the words “South Sea Arbitration? Who cares?!” throughout the clip.
The video also showed shots of China’s artificial islands and military hardware. At the end, a map of China can be seen together with a glaringly visible 9-Dash Line.
“A musical video compilation of Chinese citizens definitely stating “South Sea arbitration, who cares?” has gained over 3.5 million views. The video was posted on the Weibo account of Beijing news site dooo.cc on the day it was announced that the Permanent Court of Arbitration had ruled against China in its claims to resources in the South China Sea. It was shared by the Chinese Communist Party Youth League’s account,” read the video description.
While the video has since gone viral in Chinese social media, the Filipino online community has both condemned and mocked it—with many ridiculing the Chinese way of saying “Who cares?!” as similar to the word “hookers”.
Others also dismissed the video as bravado and called on China to abide by the ruling.
Chinese citizens angry with the arbitration decision have been calling for their government to boycott products from the Philippines, the United States and the rest of their country’s regional rivals.
