- PNP Chief Ronald Dela Rosa apologized to Cebu City Mayor Tomas Osmeña for the relief of PRO-7 police officers
- Osmeña was offended by the transfer of Cebu City Police chief Sr. Supr. Benjamin Santos
- The mayor said he is not taking any part in the PNP’s anti-illegal drugs campaign anymore
Philippine National Police (PNP) Chief Ronald Dela Rosa apologized to Cebu City Mayor Tomas Osmeña over the transfer of the city’s police chief, Senior Superintendent Benjamin Santos.
“Pasensya na, Sir ug nahiubos ka ug gitangtang imong city director [I apologize Sir if you felt bad when your city director was relieved],” Dela Rosa said during a press conference on Monday, July 18, at the Police Regional Office in Central Visayas (PRO-7).
Mayor Osmeña was reportedly offended because he was not informed of the relief of PRO-7 officers beforehand. He withdrew his support to the PNP’s campaign against illegal drugs.
On July 14, he said he will no longer give cash rewards to policemen for every drug suspect and other types of criminal killed and will no longer involve himself in the police anti-illegal drugs campaign. He also announced that he will stop giving allowances to the new set of policemen who would be assigned to Cebu City.
“I have reservations about the reshuffling of the policemen who have done so much for our peace and order in just two months, but let’s give the new police leadership a chance to show what they can do,” the mayor posted on his Facebook account.
As mentioned in the Inquirer article dated July 18, 2016, PNP Chief Dela Rosa asked the Cebu City mayor to reconsider his decision to no longer grant P50,000 reward for every slain criminal and not to provide allowances to newly assigned police officers.
“We really need you. Please don’t abandon us in this fight,” Dela Rosa said, but added “we will survive” even without the mayor’s support.
He then urged the new set of police officers assigned at PRO-7 not to be discouraged by Mayor Osmeña’s decision.
Dela Rosa said some of the relieved police chiefs of Cebu, Cebu City, Mandaue City and Lapu-Lapu are reportedly taking money from drugs.
