- Lea Salonga went to Jessy Mendiola’s defense after the latter drew body-shaming comments online
- Salonga said “sexy has nothing to do with the outer shell and all to do with what’s in you”
- Mendiola encouraged other women to feel more confident regardless of their body size
‘The Voice Kids’ coach Lea Salonga defended actress Jessy Mendiola, who was recently named as the FHM’s sexiest in 2016 and has been criticized constantly since.
People took to social media to leave negative comments and rant about Mendiola, with some calling her “fat” and undeserving of being called the “nation’s hottest.”
On a Facebook post, Salonga came to Mendiola’s defense, saying that being ‘sexy’ is more than just about one’s appearance.
“For the record, I think Jessy Mendiola is one of the sexiest people I’ve ever cast my eyes on. It has less to do with her physique and more to do with how she carries herself.,” the Broadway actress said. “She could gain 20 pounds right now and my opinion of her wouldn’t change.”
“Sexy has nothing to do with the outer shell and all to do with what’s in you. You could be a Victoria’s Secret model and have zero sex appeal, or be someone customarily plus-sized and get everyone in the room to set their gaze upon you,” she explained further.
She added: “Your opinion could differ from mine and not be any less valid. It’s in the eye of the beholder.”
Meanwhile, Mendiola addressed the mean comments she’s been receiving online through an Instagram post.
“My body may not be perfect but that will not stop me from being confident with myself.” she said. “We all come in different sizes and shapes but that shouldn’t stop us from being happy with our own bodies.”
The actress encouraged other women to be more comfortable with their own body and break the vicious cycle of body-shaming.
“Go ahead girl, wear that bikini and FLAUNT it. After all, it’s YOUR body. Not theirs,” she said.
