- Senator Tito Sotto is under fire for victim-shaming a woman on ‘Eat Bulaga’
- The female contestant shared a story of her being sexually assaulted by her drinking buddies
- Sotto reacts to the woman’s story by blaming her for drinking and possibly wearing shorts
Senator Tito Sotto attracted the ire of the public once again with a controversial remark he gave to a female contestant in a recent episode of the noontime show ‘Eat Bulaga’.
In the show’s segment ‘Juan for all, All for one’, a female contestant shared how her drinking buddies took advantage of her in the past and sexually assaulted her while intoxicated.
Sotto immediately reacted and berated her for putting herself in a vulnerable position and said she shouldn’t be drinking in the first place — implying that it was the woman’s fault that she was taken advantage of while she was drunk.
“Kasalanan ng lahat ng iyan, ‘yung pag-inom. ‘Yung pa-shot shot. Kababae mong tao, pa shot-shot ka,” he told the woman.
[The problem there is the drinking. Taking shots. You’re a woman, you shouldn’t be drinking liquor.]
He also questioned what she was wearing at that time and assumed that she was probably wearing provocative clothes, which his co-hosts, Jose Manalo and Wally Bayola, poked fun at.
“Hindi tama ‘yun. Umiinom ka na, naka-shorts ka pa,” Manalo added.
[That’s not right. You’ve been drinking, you were even wearing shorts…]
Sotto’s co-hosts continued to mock the woman’s experience which was followed by cheering from the studio audience.
Many took to social media after seeing the segment and called out the senator on his sexist remark, as per an article published by Inquirer.
A Facebook user wrote: “So, if you’re wearing shorts, you’re already asking for “it”? Wow, that logic makes me want to hit them with a table.”
“Horrible remarks. Now, I wonder why did the electorate voted for Tito Sotto. Don’t let fame override necessity,” another tweeted.
Some defended Sotto; saying that the senator had good intentions in mind as he was trying to “act like a father figure”.
