MANILA, Philippines – “Sa lahat po ng mga motorista, maging mahinahon po tayo. ‘Wag po n’yo akong pamarisan. ‘Yung lang po.”
[To all motorists, let’s be calm. Don’t be like me. That’s all.]
Road rage suspect Vhon Tanto had this to say even as he explained why he shot dead cyclist Mark Vincent Garalde in an incident which was recorded by a nearby CCTV.
According to Tanto, he claimed it was Garalde who acted arrogantly and cursed at him after a near-collision which was not recorded. The victm’s behavior, he said, provoked him to anger.
”Binaba ko ‘yung salamin sa kanang banda sabi ko, ‘Kuya pasensya ka na kasi ‘di ko naman sinasadya at tsaka ‘di naman tayo nagpang-abot’. Sabi ko sa kanya dapat mag-iingat kayo kasi dapat ang bisikleta, sa gilid lang. Bigla akong minura, sabi niya ‘G**o ka pala eh.’ Sabi ko, Kuya, huwag kang magmura.’ Hanggang sa patuloy pa rin ang pagmumura niya,” Tanto told ABS-CBN.
[I was lowering my mirror on the right and I said ‘Kuya, sorry because I did not mean to do it and we didn’t hit each other anyway.’ I told him to be careful because bicycles should only go on the side. He suddenly cursed me, he said ‘You are a fool.’ I told him ‘Kuya, don’t curse me.’ But he continued cursing me.]
Tanto also claimed that Garalde even threatened to smash his windshield and continued to curse him right after their fistfight. This was the moment Tanto said he finally snapped.
”Nung sinabi niya na, ‘Gusto mo basagin ko pa ang salamin mo?’ Dun na ako napikon. Tsaka may dugo na ako noon kasi may tumamang matigas na bagay sa akin. Kaya hilo hilo na ako noon,” he said.
[When he said ‘You want me to break your windshield?’ that’s the time I got real mad. And I was already bleeding at the time because I was hit with a hard object. So that’s why I was really dazed at the time.]
