MANILA, Philippines – No, there are no Chinese missiles in Zambales — only Chinese miners using the Philippines’ own resources against it.
Clarifying earlier reports about the alleged presence of the Chinese military in Zambales, Gov. Amor Deloso said Chinese mining companies operating in the province’s mountains have extracted soil and boulders which were used to build China’s artificial islands in Scarborough Shoal in the West Philippine Sea.
“The Chinese military is based at an airport built by China at the reclaimed area near Scarborough Shoal, which was built out of the mountain soil of Santa Cruz,” he said.
According to Deloso who has since suspended mining operations in the province, the Chinese used the boulders as the bedrock and the soil as the foundation for its bases.
He blamed his predecessor Hermogenes Ebdane for selling out the country to the Chinese in exchange for money.
“Siyempre may kumita diyan, imposibleng wala, hindi naman hahakot lang nang hahakot ng lupa kung walang ibinabayad [Of course, there were people who benefited from the selling, it would be impossible if there were none, they won’t get soil if there was no payment],” the Philippine Daily Inquirer quoted him as saying.
China, which recently lost in the Permanent Court of Arbitration (PCA) after the tribunal invalidated its 9-Dash Line claim, has refused to recognize the ruling; saying it will only negotiate with the Philippines via two-way talks.
In his SONA, President Rodrigo Duterte indicated the country would use its favorable ruling as leverage for any future talks with its bigger neighbor.
