Pope Francis fell over while celebrating mass at Jasna Gora Monastery in Poland.
The 79-year old pontiff tripped on the steps leading to the altar and fell flat on the carpeted platform during an open-air mass that was televised in front of millions of viewers. He got up with the help of the Master of Ceremonies Guido Marini and carried on with the service.
Because of the fall, many devotees grew worried about the Pontiff’s health. It was widely-known that the head of the Catholic Church is suffering from sciatica, a condition that causes pain on the hip, back, and legs. He also had a portion of his lung removed when he was younger.
Vatican spokesman Greg Burke, however, assured the public that the “Pope is fine” and remains in relatively good condition.
Pope Francis celebrated the 1,050th anniversary of the Baptism of Poland in the country’s holiest site: the home of Black Madonna in Jasna Gora Monastery, in Czestochowa City.
