A man has turned an old truck into a mobile shower for the homeless for them to wash up and restore their dignity.
In an article written by Ruta Grasyte of Bored Panda, it was disclosed that Jake Austin saw that aside from food and shelter, the homeless also lack access to soap, clean water, and a safe washing facility. With this, he converted an old truck into a mobile shower.
Austin bought the old truck from Craigslist for $ 5,000 and transformed it into a shower on wheels called “Shower to the People.” The mobile shower contains two shower stalls and a long row of sinks and mirrors and soap. The water is taken from fire hydrants and is warmed up with the help of an external generator.
“Good hygiene promotes health, fosters hope, and restores dignity to those who may have lost it,” Austin said.
The mobile shower roams around and provides hygiene services to the local homeless population of St. Louis.
“Every week we’ll be visiting multiple locations across the greater St. Louis area, creating easy access for those in our community who would otherwise have no opportunity to stay clean,” it was noted on the project’s website.
Meanwhile, a lot of social media users were touched by the advocacy.
“Blows my mind how many of the world’s richest countries still have a vast amount of homeless people that no one cares about! Great to see some people still care about others, unlike our governments who see them as a burden to society. They need help, not ignoring,” wrote Facebook user D.G.
“What a fantastic idea! The government should make more of these available for our homeless. Being clean could make a small difference to the people who face struggles every day,” commented T.T.
To be part of the project, one may donate at Shower to the People’s website.
