- Smart will partner with DOTC to provide free wifi connection in airports
- The service will be available in major airports across the Philippines, especially NAIA
- Smart said this will be implemented in 100 days
To realize the goal of Transportation Secretary Arthur Tugade to provide free wifi connection in airports, telecom giant Smart Communications has agreed to provide the service in 100 days.
PLDT Chairman Manny Pangilinan said that this was requested by Tugade and President Rodrigo Duterte.
“We had plans already, but they wanted accelerated rollout of Wifi. I said: ‘Fine that makes a lot of sense’,” he was quoted in a Rappler story.
The free wifi will be available in all four terminals of the Ninoy Aquino International Airport (NAIA) and airports in Davao, Iloilo, Bacolod, Kalibo, Laguindingan, General Santos, Clark, Laoag, Cebu, Aklan and Zamboanga.
PLDT promised to provide up to 1 gigabyte of internet.
Tugade defended that there is no “hidden agenda” behind this deal with the government that PLDT will implement free of charge.
“We thank our partner Smart for supporting the government’s thrust to make passengers’ travel experience more comfortable, convenient and connected,” said the secretary.
Meanwhile, Pangilinan said this venture would benefit them as it would bring in higher traffic for them.
Aside from free internet, Tugado also promised to have cleaner airport comfort rooms and installation of CCTVs. He also vowed that there will be no “tanim bala” (bullet planting) under his watch.
