- De Lima to Speaker Alvarez: Research on the things I did to combat illegal drugs
- Alvarez plans to investigate on the reasons why illegal drugs spread in the NBP under De Lima’s control
- De Lima says it is unfair on her part to insinuate that she appears like a drug coddler
Senator Leila De Lima urged House Speaker Pantaleon “Bebot” Alvarez to conduct a research on her accomplishments against illegal drugs when she was still the secretary of the justice bureau.
The statement of De Lima was rooted upon reports that Alvarez wants to file a house resolution for an investigation into the proliferation of illegal drug use at the New Bilibid Prison (NBP) while de Lima was in charge.
According to Alvarez, as per GMA News, what he wants investigated is why illegal drugs has spread in the NBP while it was under the watch of De Lima; to which the lady Senator replied, via an interview published by The Inquirer after the State of the Nation Address of President Rodrigo Duterte on June 25: “Ang advice ko lang po kay Speaker Alvarez is that alamin rin niya po kung ano ‘yung mga ginawa ko na mga hakbang noong ako po ay DOJ secretary. Mag-research naman po sila kung ano po ang aking mga ginawa sa pakikilaban din sa ilegal na droga.”

She added, it is unfair on her part for them to insinuate that it appears she is a drug coddler.
Furthermore, she said there might be some people giving false information to Alvarez or the new administration in order to discredit her.
De Lima said that for her to face the House probe depends on the thrust of the investigation.
She said, if the House inquiry is really towards drafting laws to reform the prison system and to totally eradicate the prison-based criminality in Bilibid, she is more than willing to be involved; adding that if she will truly be given the chance to chair the justice and human rights committee, the newly-elected legislator said she will do counterpart things, moves and actions.
