- Environment secretary warned Chinese miners in PH to stay compliant with environmental laws
- She said she won’t hesitate to kick them out if they don’t
- She also commented on Chinese culture, said it has become very materialistic
MANILA, Philippines – Shape up or be shipped out.
Department of Environment and Natural Resources (DENR) Secretary Gina Lopez issued this warning to Chinese mining companies as she vowed to crack down on those who do not comply with environmental safety regulations.
In an interview with ABS-CBN, Lopez said she won’t hesitate to kick out those mining companies back to China if they continue to pollute the environment.
“Our people’s well being is more important than the money you make. If you want your money, go home bye bye,” she said.
Five mining companies have been suspended by Lopez since she took office two weeks ago; with four of them exporting products to China.
BenguetCorp Nickel Mines, Inc., Zambales Diversified Metals Corp., LNL Archipelago Minerals Inc., Eramen Minerals, Inc., Berong Nickel Corporation were the mining firms whose operations were ordered suspended by Lopez.
Chinese Culture Now Materialistic
Aside from the Chinese mining companies, Lopez also twitted ongoing Chinese operations in the West Philippine Sea.
According to her, the Chinese activities — which include fishing and destroying corals — reflect what has become of their culture which she said used to be very spiritual.
“They’ve become very materialistic,” she said. “All they think of is money and they’re bullies, and it’s not good at all.”
As part of its case which was decided favorably by the Permanent Court of Arbitration (PCA), the Philippines said China’s reclamation of artificial islands and heavy fishing activities have done great harm to the West Philippine Sea’s fragile eco-system.
