Cebu City Mayor Tomas Osmeña announced that he will no longer give cash rewards for dead criminals.
In May this year, after he was elected as mayor of Cebu City, Osmeña said as part of his anti-criminality campaign, he is willing to give the police P50,000 reward for every drug lord, robber or any other criminal killed. He offered P5,000 if the criminal is not killed but wounded. He said the reward would be given as long as the killing of criminals is legal or done in the line of duty.
However, on Thursday, July 14, the mayor said he would no longer give cash reward for every slain criminal.
As per an Inquirer article, Osmeña’s decision was prompted by the recent revamp of Police offices in the Police Regional Office in Central Visayas (PRO-7).
A post on The Freeman’s Facebook page said Mayor Osmeña was not informed beforehand of the relief of officers in PRO-7.
“I have reservations about the reshuffling of the policemen who have done so much for our peace and order in just 2 months, but let’s give the new police leadership a chance to show what they can do,” the mayor posted on his Facebook account.
Osmeña said he will give a “free hand” to the new set of police chiefs and will not ask for the reconsideration on the relief of Cebu City Police Director Benjamin Santos.
He added that he will no longer involve himself in the police anti-crime and anti-drug campaign.
The mayor handed his “last” reward amounting to P100,000 to Mambaling operatives headed by Senior Inspector Regino Maramag after killing two suspected drug personalities in Sitio Lawis on July 11.
