In their quest to “catch ’em all”, two Pokémon Go players fell off a cliff in San Diego while trying to collect virtual pocket monsters, or pokémons, through the popular smartphone game.
Since its July 6 release, Pokémon Go has become wildly popular around the world. Along with its rise in popularity is the increasing amount of reports on players getting injured or troublesome situations while playing the game.
The app warns its players in the loading screen to be aware of their surroundings, but was unsuccessful in preventing game-related accidents from happening.
The most recent incident is of two Californian men falling over an ocean bluff in Encinitas within San Diego county after climbing over a fence while playing the augmented reality smartphone game, as per an article published by Mirror.
The men, who were aged 21 and 22 years old, were playing Pokémon Go at the time and likely were led to the cliff when they were trying to catch a pokémon, said Sgt. Rich Eaton of the San Diego County Sheriff’s Department (SDSO).
Authorities from Encinitas Fire Department rescued the two men — one fell about 50 feet down and was found unconscious at the side of the crumbling sandstone bluff, while the other fell 75 to 100 feet. Both sustained moderate injuries from the fall and are now recovering in an area trauma center, as per an article published by Los Angeles Times.
According to the SDSO, the men will not be charged in the incident.
“I think people just need to realize this is a game, it’s not worth your life. No game is worth your life,” Eaton said.
