A young female school teacher who was abducted and then forced to wed one of her abductors was rescued by the military in Sulu on Saturday, July 9.
Major Filemon Tan, spokesperson of the Armed Forces of the Philippines’ Western Mindanao Command, identified the rescued teacher as 23-year-old Ratina Abubakar.
GMA News Online said that according to Major Tan, Abubakar was rescued by troops belonging to the 41st Infantry Division under Joint Task Force Sulu when the vehicle she and her abductors were in was stopped at a military checkpoint in Barangay Tagbak in Indanan town.
Arrested were the suspects identified as Lauril Susulan, Basar Saudan, Jipy Susulan, Salim Susulan and Salma Saudan.
“While manning a checkpoint, troops of the 41st Infantry Battalion under the Joint Task Force Sulu rescued a teacher allegedly kidnapped by armed men aboard a Mitsubshi Strada,” Tan said Monday, July 11.
Major Tan said Abubakar screamed for help when their vehicle was stopped at the checkpoint, prompting the government security forces to invite all the vehicle’s occupants to the camp of the 12th Light Armored Cavalry Troops for questioning.
Abubakar told authorities she was snatched by five armed men on June 20 while she was on her way to Kanlagay Elementary School, where she works as a teacher. She said she was later brought to the Barangay Hall in Kanlagay, Kalingalan Caluang, Sulu.
After several days of being held captive, Abubakar said she was forcibly married to Salim Susulan, the leader of her abductors, in Muslim rites.
The suspects were turned over to Indanan police, while Abubakar was brought to her family.
