- PNP chief Ronald dela Rosa said previous admin “lacked emphasis” on tackling illegal drugs
- He said the previous six years could have been used to weaken the spread of drugs in the country
- He praised Pres. Rodrigo Duterte for having “the balls” to fight drugs
Philippine National Police (PNP) Director General Ronald dela Rosa said he is not blaming the previous administration for the spread of drugs in the country, but admits that it “lacked emphasis” on tackling the problem of illegal drugs.
Asked to assess the fight against drugs under former President Benigno Aquino III, dela Rosa said the previous administration did “okay.”
“Basically okay okay naman, okay. Medyo kulang lang sa diin. Kulang sa emphasis, pero doing well pa rin. [Basically, it was okay. Just a little bit lacking in grinding it out. There was lack of emphasis, but still doing well],” he told Rappler.
The PNP chief, nicknamed “Bato” or “Rock”, is among the leading figures in the intensified campaign against illegal drugs and criminality as ordered by President Rodrigo Duterte.
Dela Rosa said that the previous six years under Duterte’s predecessor could have been used to weaken the proliferation of drugs in the country.
“I don’t want to blame them because sabihin naman nila: iba yung time ninyo, iba ‘yung time namin [they will say: your time is different, our time is different]. We are speaking of different times. Sa akin lang, ‘yung diin, ‘yung emphasis doon sa drug campaign. Hindi maging ganito kalala yung problema natin sa drugs kung ‘yung six years na ‘yun talaga inupakan niya nang inupakan ‘yang problema sa drugs, diba? [For me, they lacked emphasis on the drug campaign. The problem wouldn’t have worsened if during those six years they had really pounded on the problem of drugs, right?]” he explained.
Thousands of drug users and drug pushers have surrendered to the authorities across the country. Meanwhile, there have also been a rise in the number of suspects of drug-related crimes who have either been captured or killed outright by police or by unidentified men.
Dela Rosa praised personnel under the PNP for “working double time” in their campaign against drugs. He was also all praises for his boss, the President, who has “the balls” to fight illegal drugs.
“You can see that in what’s happening in everyday: maraming patay, maraming nahuli, maraming nagsurrender [many are killed, many are arrested, many have surrendered]… these people will not just surrender without any reason. Eh nagkakaganito lang ‘yan dahil ang presidente natin talagang may… excuse me for my words, nagkaroon tayo ng presidente na may bayag. [What’s happening now is because our president really has balls…] May bayag meaning talagang napakatapang na kaya niyang gawin ang gusto niyang gawin [Having balls, meaning he is so adamant that he can do what he wants to do],” he said.
