President Rodrigo Duterte has moved to Bahay Pangarap, making it his official residence in Manila, but it appears that his first night in his new home was “sad and lonely” according to one Cabinet official.
Presidential spokesperson Ernesto Abella said Duterte found his new home “too big” for his taste.
“Sabi nga niya, malungkot daw doon dahil malaki ‘yung bahay, aalog-alog, siya lang daw mag-isa. Wala daw siyang kasama. [He said that he was lonely there because the house was too big, too wide, and he was there by himself. He doesn’t have any companions],”Abella told GMA News.
Duterte, who was mayor of Davao City for more than two decades before being catapulted to the Presidency, is still adjusting to his new life in Manila.
He moved in after spending the weekend in his hometown with his family.
The President’s family with common-law partner Honeylet Avanceña and former wife Elizabeth Zimmerman, as well as their children’s families, are all based in Davao City. His youngest daughter, Veronica, is currently enrolled in a school in Davao City. His two eldest children Sara and Paolo, are currently the Mayor and Vice Mayor of Davao City, respectively.
As a tentative set-up Duterte plans to return to Davao over the weekend while spending most of the week in the Philippine capital.
He became the second President to make Bahay Pangarap his official residence, after his immediate predecessor Benigno Aquino III. Both Duterte and Aquino were legally single at the time they took office.
Duterte had refused to live in the much bigger Malacañang Palace; saying he is creeped out by the alleged “ghosts” living there.
Bahay Pangarap, located in the Presidential Security Group (PSG) compound, is around five minutes away from the President’s main office in Malacañang.
