A group of Martial Law victims led by a running priest protested the proposed burial of the late President Ferdinand Marcos at the Libingan ng mga Bayani (Heroes’ Grave) by wearing signages and jogging around the Quezon Memorial Circle.
Fr. Robert Reyes led members of martial law victims group Claimants 1081 and members of Sanlakas in a protest to discourage President Rodrigo Duterte from approving the late dictator’s burial at the revered graveyard.
“Pangulong Duterte, sana po’y igalang n’yo po ang kasaysayan. Hindi po puwedeng baluktutin, hindi po puwedeng manipulahin ang kasaysayan at sasabihin natin tulad ng naririnig natin, ‘yung madalas kay Bongbong Marcos, ‘The best thing that ever happened to my country is my father’, hindi po totoo ‘yun,” Reyes was quoted in an InterAksyon story.
[President Duterte, we hope that you respect history. We can’t distort it. We can’t manipulate history and say what we often hear from Bongbong Marcos that ‘the best thing that ever happened to my country is my father’ because it is not true.]
“Our message is simple. Bury only the true heroes at the Libingan ng mga Bayani. The fake heroes must not be let in, they are prohibited from going there. They plan to bury the dictator Marcos at the Libingan ng mga Bayani. We oppose that. That’s why we are holding this protest run,” he also said.
This is only one of the many initiatives of Martial law victims to oppose the late president’s burial at the Heroes’ Grave.
Last month, victims also went to the proposed burial site at the Libingan ng mga Bayani and laid down stones bearing the name of the victims who were slain during the dictatorship. Youth leaders also convened at the University of the Philippines to contest the proposal.
Duterte earlier said he is okay with approving Marcos’ burial at the Libingan ng mga Bayani. The President is known to be close to Marcos’ son and namesake, former Senator Ferdinand “Bongbong” Marcos Jr.
