President-elect Rodrigo Roa Duterte was sworn into office as the 16th President of the Philippines on Thursday, June 30.
As mandated by the Philippine Constitution, the President-elect took his oath of office at exactly 12:00 noon.
Duterte’s fraternity brother Supreme Court Associate Justice Bienvenido Reyes administered his oath-taking at the Rizal Hall inside the Malacañang Palace.
Duterte’s four children – Paolo, Sara, Sebastian (Duterte’s children with former wife Elizabeth Zimmerman) and Kitty, were with him during the swearing-in ceremony.
Photos shared by the Malacañang Photo Bureau showed Kitty, Duterte’s daughter with his current partner Honeylet Avanceña, holding the Bible, which was originally owned by Duterte’s mother, Nanay Soleng, during the oath taking.
Six hundred twenty seven guests attended the event.
In his inaugural speech, the new President said the people’s support is important for a leader, however strong, in order to succeed.
He then reiterated his call for change, which is the central message of his campaign promise.
“Change must start with us and in us. We have become our own worst enemies, and we must have the courage and the will to change ourselves.”
“I know that there are those who do not approve of my methods of fighting criminality. In response, let me say this: I have seen how corruption bled government of funds. I have seen how illegal drugs destroy individuals and ruin families’ relationships. Look at these from that perspective and tell me that I am wrong.”
