President-elect Rodrigo Duterte has still a few days before he officially assumes office but he had started with his President works. He said in a speech last June 24, 2016, that he was able to negotiate with Al-Qaeda-linked bandits Abu Sayaff to release the remaining hostage which is a Filipina named Marites Flor. It can be recalled that Abu Sayaff already beheaded the two Canadian National, John Ridsel and Robert Hall, recently, after their ransoms had not been met. They even posted the video which quickly got viral. They are also allegedly linked to ISIS, an international terrorist group who were responsiple with the recent Paris shooting.
In an ABS-CBN footage of the speech, it can be seen that he introduced Flor as proof of the successful release negotiation. Flor is 38 years old and was captured together with Ridsel, Hall and Norweigan Kjartan Sekkingstad who is yet to cross to safer grounds due to rough seas. In an interview, Flor testified that they were treated like dogs. “Ako sinasampal nila ako, dalawang beses nila akong sinampal. ‘Yung mga kasama ko binubugbog,”she added. Now she can finally sleep without handcuffs in her ankles.
In the speech, Duterte lauded incoming peace advise Jesus Dureza, who also took part in the negotiation process. Also of help, was Sulu Vice Governor Abdusakur Tan. Meanwhile, Duterte promised to make Abu Sayaff pay for these crimes. He also warned the communities to not join this horrible group and said “Avoid being a member of the Abu Sayyaf because there will be, as I said, a reckoning one of these days,”
