A former overseas Filipino worker (OFW) who returned to the Philippines and became a businesswoman was found lifeless in a grassy field in front of a cemetery in Antipolo City.
The body of 48-year-old Miriam Bermas had multiple stab wounds, mostly on her chest, with her upper lip torn.
Initial investigations indicated that Bermas was not a victim of a robbery gone awry since all her jewelry were intact when her body was discovered. It is believed that she may have known the killer.
The victim’s relatives, as well as the police, are not ruling out the possibility that the killing has something to do with the money lending business that she was running.
“Puro naman dun umiikot ang every ano niya, ‘yung routine niya. Maniningil, kokolektahin ‘yung mga ganitong payroll. [That’s where her routine revolved around in. She would collect payments and pick up such payroll],” the victim’s daughter Mimi Bermas told GMA News.
Authorities have uncovered CCTV footage showing the victim’s last whereabouts.
The video showed that Bermas went out of a gym with her friends and entered a Toyota Fortuner on June 19. Police have pointed out that the victim was wearing the same outfit as was seen in the footage, when she was discovered dead days after.
The local police have transferred to the provincial level in order to expedite the probe over Bermas’ death.
“Dito na sa provincial level ko paimbestigahan ito. Parang i-takeover namin yung kaso para lang magkakaroon ng linaw itong kaso na ito. [The investigation will now be here on the provincial level. We would take over the case in order to have clarity for this case],” explained Rizal Provincial Director Sr. Supt. Adriano Enong Jr.
Meanwhile, the family of the victim is pleading to the still unknown killer to surrender.
“I’m sure na kahit papano natulungan ka ng nanay ko. [I’m sure that in some ways, my mother helped you.] How could you even do that? Puro sa puso, bakit ganun? Gusto kitang maintindihan. So kung uusigin ka ng konsensiya mo. [It was all in the heart, why? I want to understand you. If your conscience bothers you],” the victim’s daughter said.
