Marites Flor, the Filipina held hostage by the Abu Sayyaf Group for nearly ten months along with three foreigners, apparently felt relieved after she was freed by her captors on Friday, June 24.
Her release was made through the efforts of Duterte and it came with no precondition, according to Presidential Peace Adviser Jesus Drureza, who was tasked to fetch the freed hostage from Jolo.
During an interview with several reporters, Marites Flor could not hold back her tears as she recounted the time she spent as a captive by the Abu Sayyaf Group.
She said she and the three foreign hostages – Canadians John Ridsdel and Robert Hall, and Norwegian Kjartan Sekkingstad – were treated by the bandits like dogs.
“Yung treatment nila parang aso kami… parang bata. ‘Pag nagkamali, binubugbog,” CNN Philippines’ Eimor P. Santos quoted Marites Flor as telling reporters after her meeting with Duterte in Davao City.
[They treated as like dogs… like kids. They beat us up when we commit mistakes.]
“Ako, sinasampal nila ako, dalawang beses nila akong sinampal. ‘Yung mga kasama ko, binubugbog,” Flor added.
(They slapped me… they slapped me two times. My companions were beaten up.]
Flor also recalled the pain she felt when the two Canadians, one of whom – Robert Hall- was her fiancé – were beheaded. The two were executed after the group’s ransom demand were not met.
“Sobrang sakit kasi nakikita mo bago pugutan sila ng ulo,” she said; adding she did not actually witness the beheadings.
[It was so painful because you saw them before they were beheaded.]
She said one of the bandits even told her that she will be next after Hall was beheaded.
