MANILA, Philippines – The main suspect in the murder of a 23-year-old woman in Olongapo last year has been extradited back to Manila on Sunday, May 1, after months of hiding in the United States.
Filipino-American Jonathan Dewayne Viane, the primary suspect in the killing of Aika Mojica last July 24, 2015 was accompanied by agents of the Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI). They arrived around 4:00 am at the Ninoy Aquino International Airport (NAIA).
Viane has gone into hiding in the US after being tagged in the murder of Mojica, along with another suspect, Nino de la Cruz. While de la Cruz was arrested in August last year, Viane fled the country a day after the crime was committed.
Mojica’s body was discovered by a witness near Maculcul Bridge in San Felipe, Zambales with the victim’s shorts stripped down below her knees on the morning of July 25.
The victim sustained three gunshot wounds to the head; believed to be from a 9mm handgun. She was wearing a pink blouse and short jeans, with her head covered by a bonnet and feet tied with a cable when she was found.
According to a witness, Mojica and the Viane allegedly had an altercation over personal matters related to the latter’s family.
The American suspect’s ex-wife, Lian, who is Mojica’s best friend, is reportedly in the US and the couple has a 4-year-old daughter.
The victim’s family believe Mojica was killed because she was trying to get information on the whereabouts of the estranged couple’s daughter. Viane and his ex-wife are reportedly battling custody over the child.
Meanwhile, Viane has been turned over into the custody of the National Bureau of Investigation (NBI). The case is being heard before the Zambales Regional Trial Court (RTC) Branch 71.
