- Floyd Mayweather Jr. opened up regarding rumored match between him and Conor McGregor
- He revealed that match might actually happen
- He said if the fight pushes through, it would be a boxing match
Retired pound-for-pound king Floyd “Money” Mayweather Jr. disclosed that the rumored match between him and mixed martial arts (MMA) superstar Conor “The Notorious” McGregor could possibly happen.
Boxing Scene quoted Mayweather Jr. as saying between bouts during a four-fight “Shobox: The New Generation” broadcast: “Well it’s really not a rumor. The fight may happen. We really don’t know as of right now. But do I think the fight will happen? Absolutely.”
If his fight against McGregor pushes through, he revealed it would definitely be a boxing match.
He said: “We’re the A side. Of course, it has to be a boxing match, because most fight that Conor McGregor won inside the octagon, he was a stand-up guy. So I’m pretty sure it’s gonna be a tough fight for me.”
Mayweather Jr. also emphasized that he won’t accept anything below $ 100 million for the fight.
“We haven’t picked a venue. We haven’t talked about money yet. And, you know me, that’s me. I’m gonna get a hundred million, of course. Every time I go out, you know, that’s my number,” he said.
In a previous interview, he said he enjoys his retired life but admitted that if he’ll come out of retirement, it would have to be for a big payday and a chance to finish his career 50-0.
Fox Sports quoted the undefeated American boxer as saying during an interview with Jim Gray on “Showtime Boxing” on March 30: “Yes, you know, I’m happy to be where I’m at. Everyone is asking me, ‘Is Floyd Mayweather coming back?’ Right now, I’m happy being on this side, but I’ve been talking with CBS and Showtime, and you just never know.”
He added that if he really comes out of retirement, it would have to be a nine-figure payday and probably a championship fight.
As for McGregor, he responded to Mayweather’s statement through a tweet which read: “I run boxing.”
