• Makati City is back in Binay family’s hands
• Vice President Jejomar Binay’s daughter, Abby Binay-Campos, was proclaimed as the new mayor of the premier city
• Abby’s husband, Luis Campos, will replace her as Representative of Makati City’s 2nd District
The Makati City residents handed the city back to a Binay after 152,859 registered voters picked former Makati City 2nd District Representative Abigail “Abby” Binay-Campos as their new mayor.
The Binay family lost control of the premier city after Junjun Binay, Abby’s brother, was dismissed as mayor in 2015 over graft charges.
ABS-CBN recalled that Abby Binay-Campos ran for mayor after the Office of the Ombudsman ordered the dismissal from service of her brother, former Mayor Jejomar Erwin “Junjun” Binay Jr. in October 2015, for “grave misconduct and dishonesty” over the allegedly overpriced Makati parking building project.
Abby Binay-Campos defeated outgoing Mayor Romulo “Kid” Peña, who got 137,329 votes. Independent candidate Jimmy Jumawan got 1,755 votes.
Binay-Campos was proclaimed early Tuesday morning by the City Board of Canvassers.
Abby’s running mate, Monique Lagdameo, also emerged triumphant after she beat closest rival, Liberal Party bet Karla Mercado, for the vice mayoralty post. Independent candidates Glenn Enciso and Edgardo Padrigon meanwhile got 5,055 and 1,877 votes, respectively.
The mayor-elect’s husband, Luis Campos, also won and was proclaimed as Representative of the 2nd District of Makati City, replacing his wife.
Proclaimed as the new Representative of the 1st District of Makati City was actor and former city councilor Monsour del Rosario. Meanwhile, Kid Peña’s camp accused Binay-Campos of engaging in cheating.
Abby countered that, as the incumbent mayor and administration bet, it was Peña who has the machinery to conduct massive cheating.
